Accounting glossary · Understand, connect, apply

Fees are amounts charged for services or specified rights, such as professional work, bank services or licensing.

Example

An accountant invoices a client $400 for a completed service and considers the relevant revenue-recognition requirements.

Remember the difference

The word fee does not determine when revenue or expense is recognized. Advance fees may initially create a liability or an asset.
