Formula and method

Gain or loss = Net proceeds − (Cost − Accumulated depreciation − Impairment)

Compare net disposal proceeds with the asset’s carrying amount after depreciation and impairment recorded up to disposal. Positive means gain; negative means loss.

How to use this calculator

  1. Collect the figures for the same entity, currency and reporting period.
  2. Enter each input using its label and unit. For percentages, enter 15 to mean 15%.
  3. Choose Calculate, inspect the breakdown and compare the result with your assumptions.
  4. Change one input to explore a scenario. Recalculate after edits; display rounding does not round the underlying calculation.

Inputs at a glance

  • Original asset cost: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
  • Accumulated depreciation to disposal: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
  • Accumulated impairment not included above: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
  • Net disposal proceeds: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
