Formula and method

(Actual quantity used − Standard quantity allowed) × Standard price

Measure the cost effect of using a different quantity of materials than the standard quantity allowed for actual production.

How to use this calculator

  1. Collect the figures for the same entity, currency and reporting period.
  2. Enter each input using its label and unit. For percentages, enter 15 to mean 15%.
  3. Choose Calculate, inspect the breakdown and compare the result with your assumptions.
  4. Change one input to explore a scenario. Recalculate after edits; display rounding does not round the underlying calculation.

Inputs at a glance

  • Actual quantity used: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
  • Standard quantity allowed for actual output: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.
  • Standard price per unit: A nonnegative numeric input in the units specified by the label.

Worked example

Follow one calculation.

Actual quantity used
1100
Standard quantity allowed for actual output
1000
Standard price per unit
5
Calculated result
500

Unfavourable cost variance: actual cost exceeds the relevant standard.

Assumptions and interpretation

Use the standard allowed for actual output, not simply the original budget quantity. Waste, quality and product mix can explain differences.

The output is a model based on the figures entered. Check source records and use the accounting or contractual definitions relevant to your task before relying on a result.
